Intercorstal Page 50

My experimental comic, The Intercorstal continues to creep toward its 96 page target. Don't get fooled by the 'Page 50' suggesting I'm only half-way there -- the past year I've been working on pages out-of-sequence for other projects, and the total is much nearer to target, although it's difficult to get a consensus just how many pages are actually out there.

Early next year, with Anxietydecending's help I'll be releasing a very short run of 'Elipses' which collects everything collected so far, looking to drop some of the chaff and add some more premium content ready to get a 'proper', 'grown up' release sorted.

Hermes Press to publish Sparrow and Crowe

THE CASSETTE COMIC (Attempted Not Known #11)

The Cassette Comic is a 72-page graphic novel that looks very much like a mix tape (a mix tape is a type of playlist). After the first two comic/objects--the Cigarette Comic and the Comics Cube--I was looking for other forms that would lend themselves to a collection of pages or panels. A cassette tape is a great size and shape, and the idea of a Cassette Comic appealed to me so much that I bought a carton of plastic cassette cases as soon as I thought of it. I spent a lot of time thinking about the dimensions, how to do the binding, and whether to drill holes through the entire thing. It took over a year to decide whether to add a cardboard flange to imitate the part of the cassette that is wider, along the business end.

Drawing the comics, of course, turned out to be the easy part.

What turned out to be more difficult than expected, however, was coming up with a topic for the piece. I had all the details of the form and the binding figured out, I had about 250 plastic cases, and I even knew how many pages I would need to make the cassette the correct thickness. What I didn't have was an idea.

Originally, I planned to screen-print a love story in white ink on brown accordion-folded paper (to look like magnetic tape). I figured I should make the inside of the tape out of a single piece of unbroken paper (like magnetic tape) which meant a folded piece of paper about 4 feet long. I checked the prices of long rolls of brown paper, and sketched elaborate diagrams for screen-printing batches of panels using standard screen sizes.

Then, I had a realization: "The hell with that."

It was much easier to do a standard binding, and build a book that would be easier to read. If you drop it, you don't have to re-fold the damn thing.

And, at last, a topic came to me. When I was very young, my father gave me a cassette recorder. That time in my life was interesting in a number of ways, and the cassette recorder seemed like a good way to connect the story to the form. In fact, I am hoping that it seems like I chose the story first, and then came up with a form factor to echo the theme. That would be way smarter than what really happened.

The Making of the Comics Cube (Attempted Not Known #10)

The Comics Cube is a cube puzzle with the colored stickers removed and replaced with comics.

I had been thinking about the idea of comics that could be rearranged or constructed by the reader. Scott McCoud has done a lot of online exploration of this area, and Jason Shiga has created multi-threaded narrative forms in several of his works, but I was looking for a simple way to literally put the narrative into the reader's hands. A Rubik's Cube of comics panels was obvious. Each face contains eight panels arranged radially around the center. The corner panels are diagonal. Each panel has an implied color; something in the text or the drawing refers to one of the colors on the cube. This means that it is possible to solve the cube again, after you have spent some time mixing it up and creating new stories.

Drawing the comics, of course, turned out to be the easy part.

Like the Cigarette Comic, the second comic/object presented a number of production challenges. First, I had to find a source for cubes in bulk.

Of course, the Internet came to the rescue; but the cubes were clearly quite old, and the glue had hardened to the point where the stickers could not be peeled off.

After experimenting with various solvents and sharp implements, I finally settled on a method that involved heating the cubes in a toaster oven and then using a craft knife with the blade installed backwards to scrape the stickers off. It turned out that the melting point of the glue was not much lower than the melting point for the cubes themselves, which led to a few melted cubes as I developed the technique.

The Making of The Cigarette Comic (Attempted Not Known 9)

The Cigarette Comic is a set of 20 micro-comics about smoking, packaged in a box to look like a pack of cigarettes. It was the first issue of Attempted Not Known to take the form of what I now call a comic/object. I had already published eight issues as booklets, and learned a lot—mainly, that people do indeed judge a book by its cover. Issues 5-7 had some very interesting work inside, but they were printed in black ink on newsprint and no one bought them. They didn't look exciting. With issue 8, I tried a hand-cut window in the cover. It worked! People really showed interest in the book, because it was clear that I had put some work into it.

So, for Attempted Not Known #9, I decided to go a step further and build a comic in a format that would really stand out.

I noticed other artists starting to do interesting things with their packaging. I had been interested in the design of the cigarette box for years, and I thought a set of comics about smoking would be a provocative subject.

Drawing the comics, of course, turned out to be the easy part.

The tolerances for the box are very precise, which makes sense in a production environment where the boxes are die-cut by the thousands. It took a certain amount of effort to create my own box design using the Linux tools that were available at the time. It was difficult to find paper thick enough to stand up as a box, but thin enough to run through a printer; shiny enough to look realistic, but matte enough to take ink. I struggled with a number of prototypes which gradually got better and better. Some of the early ones that I sold were salmon-colored, because I hadn't yet found a paper and printer combination that worked.

At one point, I decided it would be nifty to package some of them in plastic, complete with California tax stamps. I placed an ad on Craigslist, specifying the brand with the correct box size, and pretty soon a guy got in touch with me. I gave him instructions for removing the plastic without damaging the pull tab, and a week or two later I purchased 20 empty wrappers from him. They fit perfectly, and really rounded off the look of the package--but of course once you open the box and read the contents, you can never re-wrap it again.

Hand-cutting and gluing each box, cutting, folding, and stapling the 20 booklets for the inside, and putting everything together takes about 20 minutes per copy. In this way, the Cigarette Comic ended up as an unintentional commentary on consumer culture. Cigarettes are not just something disposable, they are the most disposable thing of all. People who don't need them burn them just for the smoke produced in their destruction--and then throw away the butts and the boxes by the side of the road. The Cigarette Comic is the opposite of this throwaway culture, and a tribute to it at the same time.

Having reached 50 pages feels a little like a milestone (or a millstone). It means in a couple of weeks, this site will be one year old! Considering the weekly update schedule, and the estimated length of the book, ECTOPIARY will be finished sometime in 2020. (Truthfully, I hope to increase the updates to twice a week before long, thereby shortening that span.)

It's been an interesting week for the site. After meeting the talented and lovely Spike (responsible for Templar, AZ) at the New England Webcomics Weekend shindig, she graciously plugged my comic on her own site. It was extremely gratifying to see the spike in the readership. My thanks to her and everybody who takes the time to read my efforts.

Also, some of you may have noticed that I gave the website a much-needed sprucing up. I replace the hideous logo, added a couple more links and gave it new buttons. The "About" page is still a bit dry, and when I finally get the inspiration, I'll spice up the text a bit.

Peoplings - autism, education, and the Savage of Aveyron

Hi, Jeff Benham here. I've been part of PRO-Comics from the start, but this is my first post. I've been toiling away with 7000 BC, making comics, teaching, organizing events, as well as working on my many jobs outside of the comics world. Hi, y'all.

This post is about my main comic project for the past couple years - a graphic novel about autism called Peoplings that I'm making with Courtney Angermeier. Peoplings weaves the stories of two children - Max, a contemporary kindergartner, and Victor, also known as the Savage of Aveyron, a feral child found in the woods of France in 1800. Both are based on real children.

Many of Victor's symptoms were related to autism. Young doctor Jean-Marc Gaspard Itard worked with Victor for five years, and through it he developed what became the basis of not only modern treatment for autism, but special education and many other educational approaches, including Montessori teaching. Through Max's story, we get to see where all of this has led, as well as those things outside of the formal treatment structure that come into play - family, friends, social support structures, and so forth.

Below I've got a short section - Victor's story leading into Max's, in the very different styles that I'm using for their stories and their perspectives. We have the first section (about 70 pages) completed and posted as a pdf on our website, peoplings.com, and we also just got the project posted on kickstarter.com to do some fundraising towards completion. Colaboratay, Scenes 1-1 to 1-16

Hi, I'm Gareth A Hopkins (aka grthink) and here I present the result of a comic project that I and my friend Daryl Morris (aka anxietydecending) completed in Jan 2010 at our shared blog Colaboratay. It wasn't the only project we worked on there, but it was arguably the most successful.It was Daryl that suggested it -- a conversation in comic format, one frame at a time. Daryl started it with Scene 1-1, and then I did Scene 1-2, and so on. Each frame was done postcard sized (6"x4") in case we wanted to collect and frame them at a later date. The pace was pretty frantic, considering we've both got quite a lot on, and after this first sixteen, we started another run, but we ran out of steam with an unresolvable argument about the quality of the film Cool World (that link is a little dig from me).As we were working on it, we were also having other conversations -- in real life, via email, and via the comments on the blog as we posted our scenes up. These conversations informed the direction of the comic -- for instance, Daryl's switch to living in a black and white world directly followed a conversation IRL about Vib-Ribbon. These conversations formed a rich meta-layer to the comic that I found really interesting and exciting, but I don't think Daryl was as fussed about its presence as I was. Anyway, after this unnecessarily involved intro here it is:

Hi all. MisComp is my web-comic-blog thing, by me, Nick. I live in Bristol, England, and (amongst other things) am friends with Simon M. of Smoo Comics. He's been drawing comics for a while now, and it was a couple of years ago that I decided to borrow this 'comic' format he kept going on about to explore another creative outlet. Like Simon's work, my own is semi-autobiographical. Unlike his work, I can't draw all that well. Never mind. I've kept at it, and recently even got a pretty good review from Kevin at Optical Sloth.

The title 'Misinterpreted Complications' comes from my collection of thoughts and writings as a teenager (a few years ago now), which covered the usual banal misunderstandings and grievances of youth. Whilst in the last decade I've grown up a bit, there is still plenty about being/Being in the world that leaves me perplexed, and I think its partly for that reason why I've continued with the title - as a nod to a life project of coming to terms with it all... but maybe also partly because I couldn't think of anything else to call my web-comic.

I try and draw roughly three comics a month, all of which are available on my site miscomp.wordpress.com. I've included a recent one below, 'Vestal Tendencies', although its probably one of the least funny that I've drawn for a while. Sorry about that.

Hey gang, really incredible work up here. my name is John Isaacson, and I know Mike from comics conventions around Portland. I've been making a quarterly zine of concert reviews in comics format called Feedback. I'm up to issue eight and you can check it out at Powells or Reading Frenzy if you're curious. I recently started digitally coloring the strips because they were picked up for the Willamette Week's music blog, so color is free. But it takes forever to color the strips! If anyone has any advice on how to color strips quickly and efficiently (digitally), please let me know or I'll probably start coloring them by hand. Keep up the great posts!

Continuing from the last one.....

Dang, that's it. I have GOT to stop lettering quickly. Every now and then I think that maybe my trouble with lettering is that I'm too slow and cautious and that makes me tense up. So I try the opposite approach and just throw it the hell on there. As you can see, the results aren't all that.

On the other side of things, I'm enjoying getting to know these individuals a little better. I think I'll keep following them around.

I was trying to be really fluid with this one, as I sometimes find myself getting tighter than I would like, but that crept into the lettering as well, where it's not welcome. Maybe I was too loose. Inking with a brand-new Sharpie kinda forces that. ;}

Bewildered little kids and other assorted oddities

I have a strip called Anecdote that's been appearing in the Brooklyn weekly I work for since late 2008. It's also on Drunkduck.com. (I'd love to have my own site to put it on, but technical ignorance gets in the way.)

I thought I'd try putting up a few of what I've thought were the stronger ones (sometimes verbally, sometimes graphically, and even both on a good day!)

This thing is still in "throw stuff at the wall and see what sticks" mode. Some things are sticking now, but most of the characters, to my annoyance, still don't have names. (Not my fault---most of them haven't told me their names.)

It's pretty lame and the idea doesn't go anywhere, especially with that dumb caption I tacked on at the end, but it struck me as a somewhat darker twist on the same idea you had....

I'll probably expand on this later but for now I'll just say that this is a group blog for people who make comics to post their comics on.
It's about comics.

To welcome you all personally, I'll post my very first published comic made way back in 2001...

Back then, when I was in the middle of taking six semesters of comics classes at Pacific Northwest College of Art, I was asked by my teacher Timothy J. Miller to contribute to a zine called Shiot CRock which he started on The Comics Journal messageboard. I was very reluctant at first but finally signed up on the last day.

A few months later a cartoonist (blog member "Honcho") was editing an anthology called Swell and asked me to contribute. I completed a twelve-page story called Eyeballs for it but months later, he decided it wasn't right for the book. The only other thing I had was this two-page comic so I sent it. The book featured many of my favorite cartoonists and sold a couple thousand copies.

Eventually this comic was seen by millions of people on the internets (thanks to all who posted it on MySpace, etc.)
